Wagga Wagga — Humanity in a Dustbowl
On her way south, Margaret keeps hearing about a big homeless camp in Wagga Wagga — stories told by shopkeepers hundreds of kilometres away. At Wilks Park she finds a tent city and motor home camp in a dry dust bowl. Over several days she befriends the women in the tents, navigates a tense encounter with a suspicious camp leader, and discovers a second, quieter camp of homeless retirees along the river — people who have lived there for years but don't consider themselves homeless. She meets Sam, a young man who goes to work every day from a swag, and Chris, who has carefully decorated the inside of his quirky van. Eight weeks later, the camps have only grown.
